Up until recently, most of us perhaps didn’t give much thought to our home offices, but with so many of us working at home during the Covid-19, home offices have become increasingly important. When in the past it might have been a place to catch up on a little correspondence or put an extra hour or two in at the weekend, we’ve been spending all our working hours in our home offices and it has become all too clear that we’re just not geared up to creating the right space for working from home.
In a recent study, only 30% people working from home stated that their workspace was comfortable. As working from home continues to be increasingly prevalent, it’s vital that we put time and thought into creating a space that is conducive to productivity and creativity and that is comfortable and does not adversely affect our health. Here are some tips to set you on the right path to the ideal home office…
The right environment
The key to being happy working from home is ensuring you are in the right environment. Of course, not everyone has a dedicated spare room they can turn into a home office, but it’s a good idea to put some thought into where would be a quiet space, free from distractions. Don’t automatically opt for the kitchen table if you have a full and hectic household! You’ll need peace and privacy if you’re making phone calls, you’ll want to be able to control the temperature and lighting in your office area, and if you personalise it, you’ll enjoy spending time there. A few pictures or decorative items can make all the difference to a previously stark office space.
The best desk
A good desk is very important. If you’re working for long periods of time at a desk that isn’t at the right height for, this you can lead to back and neck strain. A desk that is too small will feel awfully cluttered and that will reflect on your state of mind if you don’t have space to neatly organise your work. A good desk will have plenty of space, and it will be at the correct height for you. An adjustable desk is a good idea so you can change your desk to suit a change in posture.
An ergonomic chair
Perhaps the most vital aspect of your home office is an ergonomic chair. It’s tempting to just use any chair you have in your home, but that will be a very bad idea. Invest in a good quality ergonomic chair and you’re saving yourself from so many health problems down the line. You’ll also be far more comfortable from the start.
Extra ergonomic tools
Don’t forget the little extras that will make your home office more comfortable. Things such as a footrest and a monitor arm to ensure your viewing level is just right. Files, pen holders and some nice stationery will make your desk feel organised and look attractive too.
