The Vision and Architectural Challenge
This project was initially specified with large concrete slabs to achieve the same joint alignment as the curtain wall system. However, the cost of this solution was extremely high, and the architect was looking for a more economical and durable alternative. As a result, Frontek tiles with a concrete-look finish were selected to maintain the desired aesthetic appearance. We carefully aligned the tile joints with the curtain wall joints to preserve the original architectural vision.
Our Process and Implementation Strategy
At the beginning of the project, we resolved all critical technical challenges of the building, including the sharp edge detail at the top level. To achieve the required alignment with the curtain wall system, we selected two different tile sizes, 40×120 cm and 50×120 cm, in order to create the correct façade module.
Phase 1: Consultation and Specification
The architects selected three different grey tile colours, and we prepared 3D renderings using the actual tiles to help the client evaluate and choose the preferred option. We proposed Frontek because it offers a wide range of concrete-look finishes together with a concealed substructure system. Following the colour selection, we prepared preliminary shop drawings for corners, window and door flashings, and façade sections incorporating the concealed fixing system. As the building was designed to achieve LEED certification, the project engineers responsible for the certification process sent tile samples to a testing institute in Spain. The Frontek tiles successfully passed all required tests.
Phase 2: Technical Execution
The installation process began with a detailed on-site survey to determine the actual deviations of the building structure. The adjustability of the Frontek system allowed us to compensate for these deviations and achieve perfectly straight façade surfaces.
The installation sequence included:
- Installation of brackets using the appropriate Fischer anchors.
- Installation of the vertical aluminium profiles.
- Installation of the Frontek tiles using the dedicated Frontek clamps.
All profiles were supplied in black to create clean and elegant joints, avoiding visible aluminium reflections under sunlight.
Integrated Product Offerings and Solutions
Frontek ventilated façade systems can be used for any type of building, whether residential or commercial, high-rise or low-rise. These systems significantly improve the energy performance of a building through continuous rear ventilation, while porcelain tiles require virtually no maintenance throughout their lifetime. Frontek also offers large-format solutions, with tile dimensions reaching up to 1000 x 3000 mm, providing architects with complete design flexibility.
Architectural Facades
The use of Frontek tiles within a ventilated façade system provides numerous advantages:
- Reduced energy costs – Porcelain ventilated façades can reduce heating and cooling consumption by up to 35%.
- Improved environmental certification ratings – Supports sustainable building certifications.
- Enhanced insulation – Reduces external noise and improves protection against solar radiation.
- High durability – The low water absorption of Frontek tiles provides excellent frost resistance and high resistance to scratches.
- Easy installation – The internal honeycomb structure and longitudinal slot simplify handling and installation with various façade systems.
- Low maintenance – Resistant to stains and chemical products, making cleaning simple and infrequent.
Project Results and Sustainability Impact
The Frontek ventilated façade system significantly improved both the building’s performance and its architectural appearance. Key benefits achieved include:
- Improved thermal insulation.
- Enhanced acoustic insulation.
- Improved aesthetic and architectural appearance of the building envelope.
- Increased protection from weather conditions.
- High energy performance.
- Elimination of thermal bridges, mould, and condensation.
- Simple and limited maintenance requirements.
Client Feedback
The client and architectural team were highly satisfied with the final result. The project successfully achieved the desired architectural appearance while providing a more economical and sustainable solution than the originally specified.
