Owning a pool is fabulous isn’t it? All those long summer days, swimming, relaxing, unwinding. Then there are the amazing pool parties with friends and family gathered together for fun and laughter. To ensure your pool provides you with decades of enjoyment, it’s important to ensure it is well maintained, and one of your routine maintenance procedures should be to keep an eye out for potential leaks. Poolslose water for a variety of reasons. A lower level of water may simply be evaporation, or the kids have been splashing about a little more than usual, but it could also be a leak so it’s important to know how to check properly to ensure you deal with any issues quickly.

Signs to look out for:

Knowing the signs of a potential leak can help to prevent a small problem becoming worse as you’ll be catching the issue quickly and fixing it.

Check around the pool and the filter on a dry day. Are you seeing any damp areas?

Water problems such as persistent algae or a chemical imbalance you can’t fix could be a sign of a leak.

Do you feel as if you’re filling up your poolfar more than you used to?

Check for loose tiles or cracked tiles, these can easily be the source of a leak and of course should be fixed because they could also cause cuts or grazes.

Check your decking. Is it warped or sinking? Has it been lifted by tree roots? All these could indicate a pool leak problem.

How to be sure you have a leak

Here are two methods of leak detection. Firstly, you should determine if the water is simply evaporating normally. So, take a bucket and fill it with water. Mark the level on both the bucket and in the pool and then a few days later, measure again and record how much the water levels have fallen. If the pool level has dropped more than the bucket, then you may have a leak.

The second method is to locate the leak. Take time to inspect the entire pool area on a calm day. Look for any cracks or loose tiles, paying particular attention to the steps, the pool corners and any areas where fittings such as steps and rails are attached. If you find something that concerns you, squirt a little pool leak detection dye on the area and watch what happens. If the dye simply circulates in the water, then there is no leak. However, if the dye disappears into the crack then you have a leak issue.
